What Does it Mean to Become "Bulletproof"?
If you’re plugged into fitness circles online, you’ve probably come across the term “bulletproof” when talking about joint health or injury resilience. Coaches and trainers often use it, many inspired by Ben Patrick (a.k.a. Knees Over Toes Guy) the Athletic Truth Group (ATG).
While we didn’t coin the phrase here at Freak Athlete, we’re here to share what it means to us—and why you might want to start down your own path to becoming "bulletproof."
First, Let’s Clear This Up: Bulletproof is Not Literal
“Bulletproofing” is a powerful metaphor, but let’s be clear: it doesn’t mean you’re actually going to become invincible or immune to physical harm or injury.
However, the idea is simple: the stronger and more mobile your body becomes, the less likely you are to face injuries that could sideline you from the activities you love.
Our Take on Bulletproofing: Mobility, Strength, and Resilience
For us, “bulletproofing” is about building a body that’s both mobile and resilient. Here’s how we break it down:
- Better Mobility: The more flexible and mobile you are, the greater range of motion you can achieve.
- Greater Strength: With better movement quality, you can build strength through a full range of motion, allowing muscles and connective tissues to grow stronger and more durable.
- Reduced Injury Risk: As you build functional muscle and connective tissue strength, you’re less likely to get hurt—even during unexpected or intense movements.
It’s not hard to see why “bulletproofing” sounds way more exciting than “mobility-strength training with a focus on injury prevention”—but that’s essentially what it is.
Ben Patrick popularized the term because it resonated. He didn’t set out to create buzzwords; he set out to help people, one knee at a time.
The Roots of Bulletproofing: Inspired by a Legendary Coach
The origins of this concept can be traced back to the late Charles Poliquin, one of the most influential strength coaches of all time. Training Olympics medalists across over 20 sports, Poliquin was a pioneer in using strength training to protect joints and enhance resilience.
Here at Freak Athlete, we found inspiration in Poliquin’s words: “Strength is only gained in the range it is trained.” This sparked a transformation for our founder, Benji and shortly after, the Hyper Pro was born.
Why Bulletproofing Matters Beyond the Gym
Building a “bulletproof” body isn’t just for athletes; it’s for anyone looking to improve their quality of life.
For Example:
- An injured person looking to fully recover & come back stronger.
- A busy parent finding relief from chronic back pain and being able to play with their kids.
- An older adult living independently for longer, with the strength to manage their daily tasks.
The ability to move freely and without pain shouldn’t just be a luxury for athletes or the young—it’s something we believe everyone deserves.
